Floppy discs were replaced by writable CDs and then writable CDs were replaced by portable jump drives. Have you ever been entering personal and sensitive information onto a webpage to make a purchase and then suddenly wondered whether the page was secure? Or have you ever been downloading information like financial account statements from a website and wondered if the data was secure? How is it possible to tell if a webpage is safe and your information is sufficiently encrypted?
The easiest way to determine if a webpage is safe is to check for the lock icon on the bottom left- or right-hand corner of your browser. Be sure to double click on the icon to view information about the site’s security. The security information will contain data about the website’s identity, including who owns the site and what service provider has verified the site, as well as details about the site’s privacy and encryption technology.
The lock icon is a pretty solid guarantee that the information you send or receive uses a secure connection that encrypts the information before it is sent over the Internet. If the lock icon does not appear, the information may be sent as plain text that is easily viewable by a third party. Additionally, some untrustworthy sites imitate the lock icon to make it seem as though their site is secure, so be sure to double click the lock icon to investigate further.
A second method for verifying a webpage’s security is to check the web address. A secure URL will start with “https” (with an “s”) as opposed to the usual “http.”
